Help us secure permanent land and start our new community farm!
Karen refugees are incredible farmers, having transformed multiple abandoned lots into beautiful community farms and gardens over the last decade, but Karen farmers have never had access to permanent land where they can put down roots and make long term plans for maintaining traditional agricultural practices and providing fresh produce to the larger Southeast Asian refugee community.
The opportunity to have our own farm is a result of years of work with Farm Philly and other partners to build internal capacity among farmers and to raise awareness among local government and local stakeholders. We finally have the opportunity to create our own farm and the support of the city’s urban agricultural team, all we need is the funding to be able to realize our dream.
The Land at Lee Cultural Center
We have our work cut out for us, but with your help we will be growing fresh healthy produce in 2027!
The approximately one acre lot behind Lee Cultural Center is sloped and covered in invasive Kudzu vine that grows over 4 feet tall in the summertime. The lot has been impacted by illegal dumping over the years, requiring a substantial amount of work to be prepared for growing fresh, healthy produce.
Thus far, in partnership with the team at Farm Philly and the director of Lee Cultural Center we have removed an abandoned vehicle, commissioned an existing conditions survey and tree survey, and successfully fundraised around $40,000 towards the needed 100,000 to complete Phase 1 of the project
